Massage Therapy is one of the oldest forms of healthcare. Countless cultures dating back 5,000 years have utilized the benefits of human touch for overall well being as well as to aide in the healing process of physical, emotional and spiritual imbalances.  Today, massage therapy is an increasingly popular alternative therapy.  According to the American Massage Therapy Association’s 2007 Consumer Survey, almost 25% of all Americans have received a massage within the year of the study and 34% within five years.

Contemporary massage therapy in the West is an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to natural healing that incorporates the use of Western anatomy, physiology and pathology alongside artful body movements such as stretching, effleurage, pestrissage, tapotement and more to address muscular, fascial and joint related issues.  Massage therapy has grown enormously as a profession in the last half century and today includes bodywork modalities such as Contemporary Western Massage (otherwise known as Swedish Massage), Neuromuscular Therapy, Myofascial Therapy, Sports Massage, Trigger Point Therapy and other related disciplines.

While ancient civilizations and modern cultures alike have documented the benefits of massage therapy, many recent scientific research studies have confirmed that massage plays an active role in :

Relieving back pain
Boosting the immune system
Decreasing anxiety and depression
Lowering blood pressure
Treating migraines and reducing headaches
Decreasing carpal tunnel symptoms
Easing post-operative pain
Reducing cancer-related side effects
